Savak Sohrab Tarapore, BA (Hons) Economics, Sheffield University (1958), MSc (Economics), London University (1960) and Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, Sheffield University (1996), was a career central banker. He joined the Reserve Bank of India in 1961 as a Research Officer and retired as Deputy Governor in 1996. During 1971 - 79, he was deputed to the International Monetary Fund. Since retirement, he has chaired a number of official Committees/ Boards including the Advisory Board on Banking, Commercial and Financial Frauds (ABBCFF), 1997 - 2001 Discount and Finance House of India, 2001 - 2004 two Capital Account Convertibility Committees, 1997 and 2006 Inquiry into the Affairs of the Unit Trust of India in 2001 and the Reserve Bank of India Procedures and Performance Audit of Public Services, 2003 - 04. He was a member of the Banking Sector Reforms Committee, better known as Narasimham II Committee in 1998.
He has been a regular columnist in financial newspapers. Currently, he is a columnist for The Hindu Business Line and also runs his own syndicated column which appears in different languages. He has given a number of presentations to mutual funds and insurance companies, under the aegis of the Prabhudas Lilladher 'Thought Leader Series'. Apart from being a columnist, he has authored eight books. His last book is Interpreting Financial Policies for the Common Person as part of Cross Currents Law and More published by LexisNexis in 2013.
