The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town is John Grisham’s first nonfiction book, published in 2006. It recounts the harrowing true story of Ron Williamson, a former minor league baseball player from Ada, Oklahoma, who was wrongfully convicted of the 1982 rape and murder of Debra Sue Carter. Despite a lack of physical evidence and a coerced confession, Williamson was sentenced to death in 1988. After spending 11 years on death row, he was exonerated in 1999 through DNA testing and the efforts of the Innocence Project.
