Inversions is one of Bank's more intriguing and compelling books. Those who haven't previously encountered the Culture may be left wondering what is happening, but nonetheless, the depth of characterisation and sheer pace of story make for a rewarding read. The assassins story's provide the clues to those in the know, with stories of the fictious Lavishia providing a portal to the Culture. The two protagonists appear, interact and then flit away without influencing this World to the extent that they wished, which questions the Culture's "Prime Directive" of interference-cos-we-know-best. Banks asks the question of what to do with ultimate power once you have it - similar in theme to his "Look to Windward", but with a Napoleonic bent in this instance. For those who have never read a Culture book, watch the Dotcotrs knife. Those who have will try and work out who was male and who was female in the "Lavishia" stories. Ian M. Banks' books rock along, and this one is no exception.
